The 200-level undergraduate students of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) recently showcased their entrepreneurial skills in a practical examination of the "Business Ideation and Opportunities" (ECL 203) course.
The examination, which took place on February 13, 2025, was facilitated by the course lecturer and mentor, Dr. Yinka Fagbile, who commended the students for their creativity, enthusiasm, and impressive presentations.
The practical examination which involved 200 level students of the Department of Theatre & Performing Arts, and Religions & Peace Studies (both Christian Religious Studies and Islamic Studies) in the College of Humanities Education (COHED) was the culmination of the first semester of the "Business Ideation and Opportunities" course, which aims to introduce students to generating creative ideas as undergraduate entrepreneurs and equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to identify and capitalise on business opportunities.
Businesses generated and displayed by the students include Make-up and hair making, cosmetics production, costume and textile design, production of foods, drinks and edibles, graphics and audio-visual editing, video and film production, photography and E-commerce.
Others on display include electrical power and energy generation, performing arts and entertainment business, printing & design, soap making, production of skin care products, locally made perfumes and deodorants among many others.
Earlier In his opening remarks, Dr. Fagbile eulogised the Vice Chancellor of LASUED, Professor Bidemi Bilikis Lafiagi-Okuneye and her management team for introducing the Enterprise Creation and Leadership programme to the university and creating an enabling environment for it to thrive, thus confering additional advantage to the education received by the students at the institution.
"I would like to commend our Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilikis Lafiagi-Okuneye, for her support and for creating the necessary enabling environment for the university entrepreneurship programme to thrive. And to our students, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the fantastic business ideas you brought to the table and the high level of creativity you have displayed so far in this course and in your presentations", Dr. Fagbile said.
The course facilitator also hailed the Ag. Director of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Skills Development, Dr. Omobolanle Olaleye and the Ag. Head, Department of Theatre Arts, Dr. Hafiz Oyetoro for their encouragement and tenacity in promoting entrepreneurship among students that is now yielding very positive outcomes.
Other panelists at the practical examination including Dr. Segun Harmona, Dr. Asamu, Mr. Hashim Shuarau, Mr. Jamal Apena and Benjamin Ajose, from the department of Religions and Peace Studies as well as Theatre and Performing Arts respectively, offered valuable advice and insights to the students, urging them to continue developing their entrepreneurial and business skills.
With their impressive performances, the students who expressed their thoughts and excitement re-echoed similar feelings in one accord that the learning outcomes of the ECL Programme have helped them demonstrate that they are well on their way to becoming the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
It is worthy of note that LASUED continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in their chosen careers.
